Steelers Seal Super Bowl Victory

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their first Super Bowl title since 1980 by beating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 in Detroit.

Seattle had the better of the first half, but ended it 10-3 down to a controversial touchdown by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Willie Parker ran in a 75-yard score, the longest in Super Bowl history. And although Jerramy Stevens gave the Seahawks hope, Antwaan Randel El sealed the win by executing a brilliant trick play to MVP Hines Ward in the endzone.

It brought about career-defining moments for veteran running back Jerome Bettis - who retired immediately afterwards - and for long-term coach Bill Cowher, neither of whom had won a Super Bowl before.

All in all the game was good, but slightly on the boring side. Last year’s match was a better event.

As for the commercials, there were a few that made me laugh: FedEx, Budweiser, GoDaddy.com and CareerBuilder spring to mind. My hopes were high for more memorable commercials, but I was left feeling rather disappointed. Apple didn’t broadcast the Intel ad during the show (at least not on our local cable system). I’m sure I missed some national spots when our local ABC affiliate opted-out of network and played a handful of local commercials. The Intel spot did run, however, during the special episode of Gray’s Anatomy after the Super Bowl. I was expecting more from Apple, but perhaps next year…

Congratulations to the Steelers, and to MVP Hines Ward for an excellent Super Bowl XL! Here’s looking to next year!

That FedEx commercial was too funny. You’re right that there wasn’t anything great in the ads this year.

A slight correction to your post as Willie Parker did not run in a 75 yarder for a score. Moreover, he was tackled around the 20 yard line and did, however, eclipse the previous record for a return in Superbowl history by one yard. I agree it was a boring game, with boring commercials. However it did rate as the highest Superbowl audience since 1996 of around 91 million viewers. That is huge for ABC, though the broadcasting was lackluster.
