CompUSA Makes Right Their Wrong

Yesterday, some time around noon, my mobile rang showing “No Caller ID” as the name and number. Normally, calls that don’t properly identify themselves go straight to my voicemail without second thought. For some reason, which I cannot explain, I decided to answer the call. I’m glad I did.

On the other end was the General Manager of the Colorado Springs CompUSA, following up on the letter I had written to the company’s corporate headquarters regarding their gaffe and my Apple Cinema Display I brought in for repair service. (You can read the history here, here and here.)

My letter seems to have achieved the outcome I desired. The manager, whom I might add was incredibly polite, courteous and professional, said a display was being shipped from a store in Kansas City, and that the company was replacing my damaged unit free-of-charge. The new display should arrive in a few days, at which point the swap will take place. He also added that he reviewed in-store CCTV footage of the technicians moving the display around, and while he didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, the repair room does not have cameras installed.

As expected, I’m thrilled, and my faith in CompUSA has been fully restored. While I wish I hadn’t needed to write a letter, it still shows they value and care about their customer satisfaction and take the time to investigate such circumstances. I look forward to meeting the manager and thanking him for resolving this issue.

Though a replacement is on the way, I am a bit concerned. An article appearing on MacRumors.com indicates that Apple recently boosted the specifications of the 30″ Cinema HD Display. The brightness has been upgraded, as well as the contrast ratio. While a worthwhile upgrade, if this replacement display is of the newer variety, it’ll unfortunately make my current setup appear off-balance, as one display will be significantly brighter than the other. A small price to pay, granted, but perhaps distracting enough to make the entire dual display environment I enjoy unusable.

    Hey,
I’ve been reading your blog lately and I’m glad to hear they have resolved your problem. Personally, I think I would have tracked down the person who scratched my display..Sad part I’m serious.

What, you can’t adjust the brightness in System Preferences?

    Nice problem to have.

Nickbob - It’s not a brightness issue solely, it also involves contrast. Putting my 17″ MacBook Pro (with a brighter screen) against my older PowerBook G4 17″, and tweaking the settings, does not produce an acceptable match between the two, leaving the desktop looking unbalanced.
