Spamtastic!

Ever since switching to WordPress a few months ago, I’ve noticed my site is increasingly in the bulls-eye for boatloads of spam. Everything from ads promising great home owners insurance, to Cialis and Viagra (I’m 25 for crying out loud — I don’t need it yet!) are constantly caught by my Akismet spam filter. Amazingly, I’ve had no false positives or negatives, which is testament to the community-oriented approach employed by Akismet.
I thought about changing (or aliasing) the wp-comments.php script to keep spambots and spiders at bay, but with the 100% success rate Akismet is enjoying so far, it’s probably not necessary.
Oh, and just for the record: at the time of writing, my Akismet filter has caught 1,208 spamments. That’s certainly Spamalot! (Hmm… Sorry about that. I’ll go now.)
I had this problem on my blog too. Then I found Comment-Timeout and it lets you turn off commenting after a certain time. Since I’ve started using it, I’ve had almost no spam comments.
